Ohio River Fishing Report June 15, 2009

Cannelton Dam on the lower gauge was 19.11′ and falling at 7 pm. Newburgh was 23.83′ and falling at 7 pm on the lower gauge. J.T. Myers (Uniontown) Dam was 24.39′ at 7 p.m. on the lower gauge. Smithland was 20′ and rising for the next couple days.

The week started out great with numerous Hybrids and White Bass being caught and a major front came through mid week ending the bite. Heavy rains traveling up river raised the water levels making extremely muddy conditions, especially the Green River. I fished at J.T. Myers dam twice this week, Newburgh and the Green river once and it seemed until levels raised 6′-8′ J.T. Myers was the hottest spot.

Catfish – Since the big Blue Cats have moved to the beds the smaller fish are starting to gang up. Numbers of Blues are being caught around the dams but, mainly smaller fish up to the 20 lb range.

Skipjack are gorging on minnows and can be caught for bait along with plentiful Shad in the slack water. With Catfish tournaments becoming so frequent on the Ohio River and anglers coming in from all around the country to fish here, I will be doing tournament preparation and river familiarization trips for tournament anglers.

This next weekend the river should be cleared up and down to where fishing should pick back up, just in time for Father’s Day outings.
