Ohio River Fishing Report July 5, 2009

Right now at Cannelton Dam the current stage below the dam is 12.73′ and slowly starting to fall after nearly an inch of rain fell traveling upriver. According to the lockmaster at Newburgh it was 14.8′ on the lower gauge and is steady. Nearly 3′ of water flow is coming out of each gate which is a lot of current and just about too much to be fishing in front of safely. At J.T. Myers Dam (Uniontown, Ky) the current stage is 14.73′ on the lower gauge and is expected to be steady for a couple days then start a slow descent reaching 14.0′ by July 12th.

Fish were biting pretty well Fri and Sat with around 40 Blue Cats and 10 Channel Cats caught on the Camo Fish Guide Service boat. I saw several anglers catching Stripers near the dam but not many large fish were showing up yet. It will take less flow on the dam to get the big Stripers to move up. The water temp was in the low 80s and stained. We caught a Blue Cat over 35 lbs Fri July 2nd in deep water near structure and was a good sign that the spawn is over or nearing end. The big blue brawler did not have a blemish on it like it had been done spawning for a while.
