Take Part in an Indiana Bird Count This Winter

Birding enthusiasts and those interested in learning can participate in one of the annual Christmas bird counts at selected DNR properties, now through Jan. 5.

Most of the counts are sponsored by the National Audubon Society now in its 111th year of running the program.

The activity is open to experienced birders and newcomers. It’s a great way to meet other birders and improve birding skills.

Pike and Martin County Architectural Survey Plans to be Presented Dec 9

The Department of Natural Resources Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA), which will make the presentations and do the surveys, has been surveying Indiana’s historic resources since the late 1970s.

The first meeting will be at the Pike County Library Annex in Petersburg, 1104 Main St., at 5:30 p.m.; the second meeting will be in Loogootee, at the German American Bank, 100 Charles St., at 7:30 p.m.

Blue Water Trails: Big South Fork

It looks like the gods stomped their feet in anger to make the Big South Fork of Cumberland River. They stomped so hard a large crack appeared in the southernmost part of the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky and into Tennessee. The rumble sent building-sized boulders down the sides of the cavern, nearly choking the river
